About Us

Who are we?

Denewulf District is a part of Hampshire Scouts and serves a number of communities including: Bishops Waltham, Droxford, Fareham, Portchester, Shedfield, Swanmore and Wickham. Containing 12 Groups, 6 Explorer Units and a Network (as well as other teams), there are so many opportunities for young people!

To manage the District, we have two DLVs, Zara and Angela, as well as a dedicated Leadership Team and Trustee Board; you can find more about these faces in our Meet the Team.

Scouting is about learning new skills, challenging yourself, making friends and creating unforgettable memories. Every meeting is designed to be fun and interesting, honing new skills and conquering your fears.

Many of these activities contribute towards badges for your uniform, which you can wear with pride and – particularly for the older age groups – the Top Awards scheme is a great advert for future employers.

Scouting has no “catchment areas”; however, it may be more convenient in some areas to look at neighbouring Hampshire Districts.

Our Badge

The design has several key elements that link to the history and geography, but we also wanted something new for our new District. Denewulf was a Bishop of Winchester, who in 904 gifted land at Portchester to the King in exchange for land at Bishop’s Waltham.

The castle on the badge represents Portchester, with the cross keys and sword, which are found at Bishop’s Waltham Palace (the emblem of the Bishop of Winchester) on the front.

The river that flows through the countryside, before widening as it reaches the coast, is symbolic of the rivers Wallington and Meon, whilst the trees reference the vast forest that once covered a large proportion of the District (Forest of Bere).

The wolf, however, is an entirely new symbol of our own – with a nod to the District name and obvious Scouting connections, this created an opportunity to adopt an emblem that everyone could identify with.
